2011 SART CONFERENCE LOCATION ANNOUNCED

The SANE-SART Resource Service in Minneapolis, MN is pleased to announce, in conjunction with the Office for Victims of Crime, within the Office of Justice Programs, at the U.S. Department of Justice, that the Sixth National SART Training Conference will be held May 25 -27, 2011 in Austin, Texas. We are currently assembling an excellent line-up of speakers to provide training to a multi-disciplinary group of professionals serving victims/survivors of sexual assault.

The conference is sponsored by the SANE-SART Resource Service of Minneapolis, Minnesota, with funding from the Office for Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, Grant No. 2009-VF-GX-K011.

The Sixth National Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Training Conference offers a unique training opportunity for professionals who respond to sexual assault cases across the United States. Join medical personnel, victim advocates, law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, crime lab personnel and others involved in community response to this crime as they seek to build their community’s capacity to:

  • Promote health and healing of victims;
  • Hold offenders accountable for their crimes; and
  • Realize the hope of preventing further sexual violence.

This year’s conference, SART: Together We Can!, highlights exciting advances that SARTs are making and strategies being employed to tackle the challenges they face. By training together, SART members can gain knowledge and motivation to jointly assess the effectiveness of their current efforts, consider ways to overcome roadblocks, and plan positive changes. They can also examine ways to widen “the circle of victims” they serve and issues they address.

New this year is an additional concentration on response to sexual assault survivors in Indian Country. Please refer to the TRIBAL TRACK description below for further information.

Online Registration Process Tips:

If you attended the 2007 or 2009 SART conference, you already have an account. To access your password, go to the log in screen and enter your e-mail address. Your password will be e-mailed to you.

If your e-mail address has changed since registering for the 2007 or 2009 Conference, please e-mail admin@sartconference.com. We will be happy to update the e-mail address for your account, which will then allow you to use the same registration account.

Please note that you may choose one of three payment options after registering and selecting your breakout sessions:

1. You may choose to pay by credit card immediately.
2. Choose to pay by check which prompts an invoice that you may print and mail in with your check.
3. You may delay your payment to allow you time to make arrangements for your funding of the conference.

Which ever option works best for you, we encourage you to select your breakout sessions early before they start to fill up. In the event that a particular workshop is booked to capacity, you will receive an e-mail to let you know that payment will be required to continue holding a spot in that particular session.

See you in Austin!

WORKSHOP DEVELOPMENT UNDERWAY

The conference in Austin will feature 72 workshops and six keynotes over a three-day period. With an exciting lineup of well over 100 speakers, the training provides both advanced and basic information, education on emerging topics, case studies and interactive opportunities, research findings, survivor accounts, time for dialogue among presenters and attendees, and a number of longer sessions that allow for more in-depth exploration of issues.

Four different tracks are represented in 1½ hour and 3-hour workshops: General (addressing a broad topic), Specialized (addressing a specific issue), Specific Populations/Crimes, and Interactive Sexual Assault Scenario. Workshops in the General and Specialized Tracks are geared to:

  • Examine promising practices and emerging issues;
  • Explore lessons that SARTs have learned through their response to actual incidents and/or their efforts to nurture multidisciplinary collaboration;
  • Expand knowledge and improve technical skills; and
  • Consider how to evaluate, sustain and advance SART efforts.
The Specific Populations/Crimes Track explores how to remove barriers to services and justice faced by underserved populations of sex assault victims, as well as strategies to respond to specific types of sex crimes.

New this year is an additional concentration on response to sexual assault survivors in Indian Country. Please refer to the TRIBAL TRACK description below for further information.

TRIBAL TRACK

The Sixth National SART Training Conference is addressing the issues specific to sexual assault in Indian Country by adding a complete track to comprehensively focus on complex tribal issues. There is a critical need for specialized, multi-disciplinary training focusing on responding to sexual assault victims in Indian Country. The Attorney General has identified crime in Indian Country as one of the Department of Justice’s highest priorities, including violence against women.

The training offered in Austin will serve to integrate and disseminate evidence-based information and resources to practitioners in Indian Country and help meet the goal for the presence of sustainable and high-functioning SANE/SART programs in Tribal communities. It is essential to the success of Tribal SARTs and SANEs that all of the disciplines receive adequate training and technical assistance.

INTERACTIVE SCENARIO TRACK

This eight-session interactive workshop with many of our top trainers was well received in 2007 and again in 2009.  With four years to “fine tune” this experience, it is guaranteed to be another success.  This year, SART teams will work together to identify and interview the victim and suspects, collect the evidence, evaluate the evidentiary results, decide on charging options, and testify at a mock trial.

SART teams must consist of four members representing four different SART disciplines.  If the team has more than four members, a discipline may be repeated.  Please note that if you sign up for this option you must participate in all eight sessions, so you will NOT be able to attend other breakout sessions. You will be able to attend all Keynote addresses

OTHER ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE THE CONFERENCE

A number of other activities are being planned to enhance the SART Training Conference experience in Austin.

SART Conference Exhibit Hall: Our conference co-sponsors and a variety of exhibitors, along with our bookseller, will be available during the Tuesday evening registration period as well as all during breakfast, lunch and all refreshment breaks.

Tour of Local Agencies: Visits are planned to two agencies in Austin, SafePlace and the Center for Child Protection (CCP).

  • SafePlace is a dual sexual assault/domestic violence center in Austin that exists to end these forms of abuse through safety, healing, prevention and social change. Its’ spectrum of services include nationally recognized disability services and teen dating violence prevention programs. On-site services include emergency shelter, day-care, school and transitional housing units as well as a range of counseling, support and education services.

  • The Center for Child Protection, an accredited children's advocacy center founded in 1989 to serve Travis County, is the first stop for children who are suspected victims of sexual and physical abuse and for children who have witnessed a violent crime. All services are provided at no charge and most are available in English and Spanish.

Optional Austin Excursions: We have two networking opportunities to highlight the unique flavor of Austin with its local hopes to “Keep Austin Weird!” Both activities are optional and bear additional costs.

  • Cosmic Cowboy Tour: Board a duck, that’s right a duck, right outside the hotel. Enjoy music and a box dinner on board as we splash into Lake Travis for a water tour before a quick stop at a local establishment featuring more live music.

  • Esther’s Follies: A “must-see” in Austin, this well-known comedy club will have you guffawing throughout their ninety minute performance.

Please note that these optional recreational activities will be offered at an additional charge to the participant.  Space is limited; sign up early!
